Tim Rollins and the Kids of Survival

One of my "Art with a Purpose" idols lectured in Philly on Wednesday and I got to see him in person!

He works with at-risk urban youth in the South Bronx, where they meet after school to read great works of literature and make modern art about them.  The art is now in collections all over the world!

Some memorable things:

When he sees urban poor for the first time--"I got angry--not rage.  Anger comes from the Norse root 'to grieve.'  I was grieving."

"Education is a work of art."

Collaboration begins like a quilt, where each person creates distinct pieces which are later stitched together, and ends like the voices of a choir, a sort of blending, melting pot, powerful sense of harmony.

This one is about Midsummer Night's Dream--each kid made his own psychedelic flower, using crazy supplies like Aqaba paper and fruit juice.  Try this--it looks like silk painting!
